In the two months leading up to Free Fare Summer, Durango Transit provided 32,635 rides in April and 31,956 rides in May. June 2023 saw a jump to 37,305 rides. In July, Durango Transit provided 40,135 rides and in August a record-breaking 46,067 rides. Because Durango Transit's ridership fluctuates predictably throughout the year, the more compelling comparison is between summer 2022 and summer 2023. In June, July, and August 2022, Durango Transit provided 32,582, 27,081, and 36,922 rides respectively. 2023 saw an average increase of 22% over 2022.

Durango Transit drivers had the following to say

  • Advantages of providing free rides outweighs the disadvantages
  • From an operating perspective, it's easier, faster and more efficient to not have to collect fare and confirm passes
  • Ridership is much higher
  • The amount of fare revenue we generate in a normal year isn't worth the hassle
  • Fares can manage the misuse of the system- some people would ride around all day to access the air conditioning since it was free
